Empow Welcomes ‘Red Apple Lunch’

Local entrepreneur will pack and deliver healthy lunches to Empow Studios

‘What’s for lunch?’ It’s a question many kids ask as parents scramble to prepare for the day. Often packed lunches become a last minute hurdle for busy families. Making them healthy, balanced meals adds to the effort. On this front, one local business woman is working to lend a hand.

“As a working parent, I know how hard and stressful it can be to get all of our daily tasks done,” notes Lisa Farrell, creator of ‘Red Apple Lunch.’ “We all want to make a great, healthy lunch for our kids; we simply don’t always have the time and it can become a stress point.”

Farrell started crafting lunches for her own children in New York City while juggling a successful career on Wall Street. During a transitional time in her career, she recognized that her background in business and food combined with her personal passion for healthy living gave her an opportunity to help local parents. In November 2015 after a move, she launched her healthy lunch company from a small, shared commercial kitchen space in Boston. Since then, the business has expanded service areas from Arlington and Cambridge to Belmont, Boston, Brookline, Lexington, Newton, Somerville, Wellesley, Weston and Winchester.

Empow Studios will be a new drop-off location for Thursday lunches. The option is geared towards half-day After-School Club (ASC) members. “Empow parents can choose ‘Thursday lunch’ by Saturday night, and, under ‘Delivery Option,’ choose ‘Empow’ and we’ll bring lunches to Empow on Thursday mornings,” says Farrell.

Local, Organic, Convenient

Delivering lunch to Empow ASC members one day a week is likely to expand, according to Farrell who currently offers lunches four days a week to private homes. “Parents order online for the week and we deliver on Monday and Wednesday nights for lunches Tuesdays through Fridays,” says Farrell. “I want to be a reliable, stress-free service for families so that they know we have this covered for them in a way they can feel good about.”

Online, kid-friendly menus make it simple for parents and kids to find food their child will eat. The lunches are custom built with folks choosing their main item and then which fruit, veggie and treat they’d like to have with that and if they’d also like a snack or drink. Lunches can also be made as wheat-free, vegetarian or dairy-free with many options to choose from. In addition, the food is seasonal and includes regional and organic products with no synthetic nitrates.

“We work hard to provide a yummy, healthy lunch that’s fully customized and sourced with great ingredients,” notes Farrell. “We’re continuing to establish great working relationships with some amazing local food artisans, farmers and companies including Iggy’s Bread, 88 Acres, Kimball’s Fruit Farm, and Drumlin Farm.” The freshly made lunches start at $6.00.

Buy a Lunch, Give a Snack

In addition to making sure her clients have healthy food options, Farrell also feels a commitment to the larger community. To this end, for every lunch purchased, Red Apple Lunch provides a healthy snack to children in need. Once a week, the group packs up healthy snack packs and donates them to the Greater Boston Food Bank’s partner agency Bread of Life Malden for its ‘Homeless Families Hotel Meals’ program.

“Through our partnership we’ve been able to donate 640 healthy snack packs this Fall,” says Farrell. “Our snack packs are designed as good food to help with after school homework, with each pack having a full serving of whole grains, protein and produce.”
