Summer Tech Camp in Westford

Nashoba Valley Tech offers kids tech camps to compliment area’s growing STEM interest

Lexington, MA – Empow Studios is bringing its award-winning technology camps to Westford this summer. Nashoba Valley Technical High School is excited to be hosting the Empow Summer camps,” says Gabriella White, the school’s Director of Curriculum. “We have always had a strong commitment to STEM education and believe in inspiring the next generation of engineers, programmers, and designers.”

Empow hosts over 1,000 campers throughout the year at its existing locations and the move is designed to better serve area families. We’ve always had parents from the Nashoba Valley Technical School District attend our camps in Lexington, Belmont, and Newton,” says Empow Studios’ Outreach Director Dave Gutierrez. “Now that we are in Westford, the drive is short or even walking distance for parents who work in the area.”

Exploring Technology: The 2017 Empow Studios summer camps in Westford include both a ‘Tech & Design Camp’ and two ‘Minecraft Camp’ sessions. The Minecraft curriculum focuses on the  educational aspects of the game. Campers learn modding, electrical engineering (via redstone circuits), architecture, and command blocks all while using teamwork and social skills. Campers even create very simple computers inside Minecraft. The Tech & Design Camp features robotics, 2D & 3D video game design, animation, Scratch programming, coding in Java, 3D modeling & printing, audio engineering, digital music, and video production.

Learning through Creation: All of our curriculum is project based, so campers get a chance to create something awesome that they can share with family and friends,” says Empow Studios’ Program Director Matt Silverstein. “Our staff knows how to offer just the right amount of support to allow deep learning while also empowering kids to be independent.”

Under the guidance of Senior Instructors and Camp Directors, who have degrees in engineering, coding, and digital arts, campers learn technical tools at their own pace as needed to create their projects. There is also outdoor fun that includes ‘Zombie Tag’ and other physical activities. We foster a sense of community by creating opportunities for them to participate in group projects and games,” adds Silverstein. “It’s been rewarding to see campers return year after year and meet back up with friends that they met at our program.”

“Empow Studios takes a playful approach to learning,” notes company founder Leonid Tunik. “At this age – and any age, really – our brains need to play, and we can use this to make a great impact on the kids’ future choices by building interest and excitement about technology as a universal ‘superpower,’ whether their future interests take them into the arts, sciences, humanities, or any other field.”
