Choose from projects in Python, Java, app design, and game design
Empow Coding Camp is an absolutely unique experience that offers CHOICES inside every camp session for any kid curious about coding or for those looking to flex their coding muscle. This camp explores a full range of coding skills, from block coding to text coding, and even introduces a full-immersion development team experience for those who want to spend a week in the shoes of a game developer.
Teacher-led demos and coding challenges allow for group problem solving and creativity, as campers start applying what they’ve learned to create games, apps, animations, and more.
At the end of the camp week, parents are invited to beta-test all of the projects!
A Day at Coding Camp
A Day at Coding Camp
Camp begins with a starter activity that tells our teachers about the strengths and interests of each camper. Based on the outcomes, campers then break into small groups formed around specific projects.
- Code Explorers will learn the fundamentals of coding using a drag-&-drop block-based coding languages (MIT Scratch and others) to make their first animations, games, and mobile apps. They will apply computational thinking, math, logic, and design to their story-telling, animation, game, or app project. This learning path is highly visual, accessible to any learner, and produces satisfying individual projects that can be played and shared with friends.
- Code Heroes are campers who are ready to learn a text-based language. They will choose to work with either Java or Python, learn the fundamentals, and invent and create their own programs such as calculators, secret message encoders, and games which can be played on the computer.
- Game Squad is an interdisciplinary team experience that challenges campers to collaborate on a single, focused video game design project. Under the direction of Empow teachers campers learn what it’s like to be on a real game development team as they assume the roles of designers and programmers and work to develop a playable game within one week. The team’s project will be tested by other campers first and will be posted to the Empow project gallery for feedback by professional game designers.
Campers do not have to choose their group at the time of registration. Campers who are ready to try another group can request to be moved on a space-available basis.
At Coding Camp, kids choose projects that level-up in our Coding domain. Each campers accomplishments are acknowledged in a way that is motivating, lasting, and flexible through the use of badges. Badges are awarded when kids complete programming tracks by conquering quests in Java, Python, App Design, and Game Design software. Watch our video below to learn more.
This camp must comply with regulations of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and be licensed by the local board of health. Empow Camp shall inform parents at the time application forms are provided that they may request copies of background check, health care and discipline policies as well as procedures for filing grievances.
