Empow Studios Augmented Reality & Virtual Reality Camp (AR / VR) takes you to the future of what we know today as mediums for video games, entertainment, education, R&D, and more. With the rise of consumer headsets built by Microsoft, Oculus, and others, combined with mobile apps like Pokemon Go, Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality are at the pinnacle of the hottest gaming trends. Empow’s AR / VR Camp combines state-of-the-art technology, custom programming, and student collaboration for anyone interested in emerging technology – artists, designers, programmers, and hardcore gamers.

    Augmented Reality at Empow Studios

    Week 1: Augmented Reality (AR)

    As campers amp up their skills in 3D game design, camp starts taking a turn toward the blending of the real-world and the virtual world. Campers start the week by planning their projects and ask questions like – How can I use digital assets to create an intriguing real-world experience, albeit for education, accessibility, or entertainment? We build on their experience with Unity to create AR applications, using a combination of AR markers, markerless AR, and live mobile camera video. Both weeks end with a Friday showcase, where parents and campers can immerse themselves in the number of VR & AR projects created during the camp.

    Week 2: Virtual Reality (VR)

    Campers start by learning Unity (see Unity’s video on the right), an industry-standard 3D game engine, to create their VR games and applications. Within Unity, we’ve developed custom prefabs & assets that makes it easier for campers to dive right into mini-projects on Day 1. Campers learn a combination of game design, custom programming, and 3D modeling to develop their video games. Campers then finish development of their custom Virtual Reality game, with project files to be taken home digitally. Campers end the week with polished 3D game design skills and a better understanding of the C# programming language.

    In this two-week session you will get hands-on experience with the latest VR / AR software and hardware while having a blast learning the basics of how to create apps with this new technology.

    You will be learning how to use Unity, an industry-standard 3D creation platform with roots in game development, to create exciting VR / AR apps along with the popular/supported VR / AR software tools like Oculus Quest SDK, Google VR SDK, Google’s ARCore, and hardware like the Oculus Quest headset, Daydream View VR headset with Android phone, and Google’s Daydream Standalone VR Headset.

    You will learn the basics using pre-made objects and environments. then you will begin to make your own 3D space and simple objects, and learn aspects of design and programming that make for a successful VR and AR project.

    Specific skills covered will include:

    • Understanding how AR and VR apps are designed and built
    • Development of VR and AR apps using Unity
    • Development of an immersive world in 3D
    • Exposure to C# coding language
    • Hands-on use of state-of-the-art VR / AR technology
    • Learn how to use and interact 3D virtual objects

    Why AR / VR is important

    Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies are the future of entertainment, training, industrial applications, science, and education. Current applications already offer a dizzying variety of choices, and the future for applying AR / VR-related skills is limitless. Examples are:

    • Head-Up Display (HUD) user interfaces in drone aviation, robotics, and industrial operations
    • Head-Mounted Display (HMD) used in military, rescue, and medical applications
    • Interactive virtual information displays used in education, travel, and maintenance
    • Immersive and mixed-reality gaming, such as Pokemon Go
    • Promotional applications such as virtual product tours and simulations
    • Mapping and navigation
    • Technical training, simulation, and visualization

    VR / AR as a Profession

    This camp must comply with regulations of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and be licensed by the local board of health. Empow Camp shall inform parents at the time application forms are provided that they may request copies of background check, health care and discipline policies as well as procedures for filing grievances.
