Sticky Science at Empow Summer Camp

Last week at Empow Summer Workshop in Concord we experimented with 2 classic do-it-yourself science activities. First was the Diet Coke and Mentos soda fountain- which, if you are wondering, works equally well with Coke Zero, Diet Pepsi and either mint or fruit flavored Mentos.

Next was experimenting with cornstarch and water. Mixing cornstarch and water creates a non-Newtonian fluid called an oobleck (named after the Dr. Suess book Bartholomew and the Oobleck) that has the properties of a solid or a liquid depending on the amount of pressure applied to it.
