Week 1, June 27 – July 1: AM: Coding with Scratch and Python — PM: 3D Video Game Design with Roblox
Attendees can purchase an AM, PM, or both sessions with Empow.
Coding with Scratch and Python: One of our most popular programs, this is the ideal starting place for kids who want to code, but don’t quite know where to start. Students not familiar with Python or coding can begin by learning Scratch, a block-based programming language, where they will learn key coding concepts and build a small video game or a unique animation. As kids advance, they can begin to apply these same coding concepts in Python, a professional, yet easy-to-learn scripting language. For students who want to expand their coding knowledge, we recommend signing up for summer clinic sessions.

3D Video Game Design with Roblox: Come learn how to create your own Roblox video game! Using Roblox Studio, kids will create 3D worlds and then use Lua, Roblox’s programming language, to code game mechanics. Kids will unleash their creativity by building a real working vehicle and programming new hazards for their Obbies. Kids will be able to publish, share, and play their games with friends. Come explore one of the most popular video game platforms in the world!

Together with like-minded students, they will build simple video games step-by-step, experimenting with specific tasks and movements, and sharing gameplay with their peers, while learning introductory coding concepts. They will learn to use game design program Flowlab, a platform used by professional game designers to prototype their creations using accessible drag-and-drop coding. All games will be stored online, so students can gain access after class ends, and, if their game is approved, upload it to Google Play or the Apple Store!

Minecraft Modding with mCreator: Expand your Minecraft experience by creating your own mods! Always a big favorite, using MCreator software, Kids will alter (“mod”) existing characters and designs, and build new, highly customized armor, tools, and building blocks. Kids will learn to create custom biomes, dimensions, and structures to create entirely new worlds in Minecraft! Kids will have the opportunity to explore Blockbench, a 3D modeling tool, to create customized textures and 3D models for mobs and entities in your mod, like a farm animal, monster, or boss! This program is perfect for anyone who loves Minecraft and wants to have even more control over what they can build.
