Robotics Classes

BUILD cool robots. Program them with code to make them smart! Enter competitions to show that your robot is the fastest, smartest and most capable! What do you want your robot to do? We can show you how!

2021 Spring Robotics Classes

Take a step up from Legos with an award-winning robotics class! Students will design, build, and code their own creations. Younger students will have the opportunity to grow their skills with the intuitive WeDo 2.0 robot kit. Older students will navigate challenging tasks using the motors and sensors of the Mindstorm EV3 robotics kit and experiment with programmable gadgets.

When you join our new After School STEM enrichment program – BUILD, you’ll have access to dozens of classes, available after school and weekends. Monthly membership includes two 1-hour classes each week with options across our five STEM domains – Coding, Robotics, Digital Art & Design, Video Game Design and Minecraft. Learn more about all that your BUILD membership includes when you schedule your free consultation and class.

All Robotics Classes are available Live Virtual, or in our Lexington and Newton Studios.

Class Schedules Now Available!

Our Robotics Classes are available on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. We will continue to add new class schedules – so check back often!

This program is perfect for early elementary school students interested in robots. Take a step up from regular lego and build an operational robot! Using the intuitive hand-ons WeDo 2.0 robot kit, students will learn to design, build and code several robots. Projects might include a caterpillar robot that moves by snaking, a dinosaur that can move and avoid objects, and a building that can withstand an earthquake. Through fun projects, students will gain exposure to a variety of STEM subjects such as gears, speed, angles, and how to use simple block-style coding similar to Scratch. Junior Robotics is a great robotics onramp, and will spark your child’s love of experimentation and investigation.

  • Recommended Ages: 7 – 9
  • Result: Several robots and videos of their robots in action!
  • Badge Levels Earned: 1, 2, 3, 4
  • Sessions Available: Coming Soon – Register today to join our Waitlist

For students enrolled in LIVE Virtual, parents should anticipate needing to provide more hands-on support to their child for the first hour or two of the class as they get familiar with the robotics kit.

Robotics is ideal for kids ready to build on their Junior Robotic experience, those that have already gained some familiarity with building programmable robots, or middle schoolers looking to take their first step into robotics. Students will design, build and code complicated robots: the Mindstorm EV3 robotics kit includes three motors that allow more complex movements, more sensors to give your robot more information about the world, and a more robust yet still intuitive coding software that enables more complicated instructions. With these capabilities, your child will build robots that solve more challenging tasks: navigate a maze, find and knock down a tower, play guitar, or even solve a Rubik’s cube!

  • Recommended Ages: 9+  (Whenever feasible, we group students by age.)
  • Result: Several robots of increasing complexity and videos of your robots in action!
  • Badge Levels Earned: 3, 4, 5, 6
  • Sessions Available: Tuesday: 4:30pm – 5:30pm ET and 5:30pm – 6:30pm ET, Thursday: 4:15pm – 5:15pm ET, Saturday: 11:00am – 12:00pm ET

Your house is probably full of smart gadgets: motion detector lights, a smart thermostat, or a fitbit that counts your steps. Each of these gadgets combines sensors to take in information — such as motion or sound — with computer programs that turn that information into decisions. Students in this class use the Circuit Playground Express which combines six sensors with several programming options including block-based or more robust Python code. With these tools, you can design, build, and code several increasingly sophisticated gadgets such as a Simon game, a heartbeat monitor, a tripwire that activates a light, a bike light that turns on when you slow down, or an automated handwashing timer! If your interests run more towards the designing and programming parts of robotics, this class is for you!

  • Result: Several gadgets of increasing complexity!
  • Badge Levels Earned: 3, 4, 5, 6
  • Sessions Available: Wednesday 4:15pm – 5:15pm ET

Robotic competitions are amazing fun and Empow coached teams have had incredible success, winning First Lego League (FLL) medals at the local- and state-levels including gold! Newly rename First Lego League Challenge, teams are forming now, and we will be preparing kids this fall for the competition season which begins at the end of November. More than 100,000 students worldwide compete! As they design, build, and code complex robots using the Mindstorm EV3 robotics kit, class members will learn invaluable skills and advanced robotics concepts including controls, loops, line follower, and gyro turns that will set them up for competitive success. This is a great way to gain friends who share your love of robots and raise your skills to the next level!

  • Age and Prerequisite: FLL Challenge is for students 9+. Prior experience with LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 is usually required for this class.
  • Result: Operating robot, videos of your robots tackling increasingly challenging tasks, and your code
  • Badge Levels Earned: 4, 5, 6

These virtual classes rock-- we love Empow!

I didn’t think I’d get to see my friends for awhile, but with the online Empow class, it’s like we’re together again!

These classes give me the time to get my own work done while knowing my child is learning valuable skills in a supervised setting. You've done a great job!

The small virtual class size and attentive and knowledgeable teachers make sure that my son is engaged and learning while also having fun!

My two kids attended virtual classes at Empow Studio today with their teachers and classmates, and it was a fantastic experience. Not only did it keep them busy during this challenging time when both my husband and I are trying to work from home, but it also provided them with an enriching academic activity and fulfilling interaction with their teachers and classmates!

Both my husband and I are physicians, and are having to work long hours while our kids are at home with limited supervision. You have thought of everything we are desperately in need of right now. THANK YOU!

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for doing this for our children (and for us parents too)!!!!!
