Does your child love video games? In this class, we will channel that passion by having them learn to build their own! Together with like-minded students, they will build simple video games step-by-step, experimenting with specific tasks and movements, and sharing gameplay with their peers, while learning important STEM concepts of design, problem-solving, and trial/error. They will learn to use the accessible game design program Flowlab — no coding required — a platform used by many professional game designers to prototype new builds. All games will be stored online, so students can gain access after class ends, and, if their game is approved, upload it to Google Play or the Apple Store!

  • Result: One or more video games that can be shared with friends and submitted to the Apple Store and Google play for approval
  • Badge Levels Earned: 1, 2, 3, 4
  • Sessions Available: Tuesday: 4:15pm – 5:15pm ET, Thursday: 5:15pm – 6:15pm ET, Friday: 5:15pm – 6:15pm

Calling all game makers looking to expand on their game-making skills! BUILDING on skills learned in our introductory video game class, students will expand their repertoire and tackle more complicated projects. They will incorporate animated sprites, construct multiple game stages, use code to access additional features and controls, and build their own fully-realized and playable 2D video game using Flowlab. Students often work in pairs or small groups, collaborating in order to tackle more ambitious projects! Come make new friends, have fun, and build the foundations for success in teamwork and technology.

  • Result: Fully realized 2D video game that can be shared with friends and, if their game is approved, upload to Google Play or the Apple Store!
  • Badge Levels Earned: 4, 5, 6

Have you ever wanted to make a 3D game like the ones you see on PS4, XBOX One, Wii U and other gaming platforms? This is the place to start! Using Unity, a leading platform in 3D game design, students will learn to navigate around in a virtual 3D environment, construct 3D objects and define their characteristics — are they hard like a rock or bounce like a rubber ball? — and then construct a rich 3D world setting for their video game. They will then create a video game to take place inside that new world! This class prepares students for more advanced Unity classes where they can learn to programming character movement using the C# programming language.

  • Result: A rich 3D world and simple 3D video game
  • Badge Levels Earned: 4, 5, 6
  • Sessions Available: Coming Soon – Register today to join our Waitlist

This class is ideal for students who have already learned to use Unity, a popular 3D video game design platform, and who want to learn to use the programming language C# to create their own playable 3D games and functional 3D worlds. Each season we will choose a different type of game as our focus, with popular options being dungeon crawler, role-playing games (RPG), first-person shooter (FPS), and 3rd person action games. Students can work by themselves, in pairs or in small groups, learning the skills needed to create each of these game types. This is a great way to build a complete 3D Game with the guidance and support of our most advanced instructors.

  • Result: 3D video game and functional 3D world
  • Badge Levels Earned: 6, 7, 8
  • Sessions Available: Coming Soon – Register today to join our Waitlist

This class is cross-listed under Coding. Parents should note that students will be allowed to create games with cartoon, fantasy, or mild violence in line with ESRB “Everyone 10+” rating.

RAVE REVIEWS FROM PARENTS LIKE YOU …

These virtual classes rock-- we love Empow!

I didn’t think I’d get to see my friends for awhile, but with the online Empow class, it’s like we’re together again!

These classes give me the time to get my own work done while knowing my child is learning valuable skills in a supervised setting. You've done a great job!

The small virtual class size and attentive and knowledgeable teachers make sure that my son is engaged and learning while also having fun!

My two kids attended virtual classes at Empow Studio today with their teachers and classmates, and it was a fantastic experience. Not only did it keep them busy during this challenging time when both my husband and I are trying to work from home, but it also provided them with an enriching academic activity and fulfilling interaction with their teachers and classmates!

Both my husband and I are physicians, and are having to work long hours while our kids are at home with limited supervision. You have thought of everything we are desperately in need of right now. THANK YOU!

THANKS FOR THINKING CREATIVELY TO ASSIST FAMILIES DURING THIS TIME!

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for doing this for our children (and for us parents too)!!!!!
