Roblox Coding & Game Design

Roblox is actually not a video game at all; it is a platform for user-created video games. In fact, there are more than 40 million different games hosted on the platform many of which your child may have played. At this camp we will not be using the Roblox player or main website at all. Instead, your child will be stepping behind the curtain with Roblox Studio and becoming a creator – combining art, coding, and their own knowledge of what makes a game fun to create something totally new.

Video game design is an interdisciplinary endeavor that requires combining skills from engineering and the arts. Campers experiment with storytelling, 3D art, programming, and engineering. As they build a 3D obstacle course, campers learn to think about how the layout design choices they make will influence users’ actions as they navigate the Obby. This skill is similar to that used by architects and civil engineers as they design spaces and anticipate how people will interact with them. This camp can be a platform to spark your child’s passion for any one of the several disciplines covered, or a future of dynamic interdisciplinary creativity.

• Make 2D video games in Scratch or Flowlabs with STEM Expedition
• Couple game design with an introduction to Java coding with Minecraft Modding with Java
  

Most days have four periods focused intently on student learning and project creation. Whether they’re coding, designing video games, or sculpting in virtual 3D clay, we believe creativity is essential and is built into the DNA of our program design. We foster collaboration because it’s an essential learning skill and because it increases STEM learning and because making friends with kids with shared STEM interests builds lifelong learning and because it is an awesome part of camp! Outside activities, lunch and breaks provide the balanced no-screen time campers need to thrive and come home composed for the evening. At week’s end, our rock star campers show off their ambitious projects to family and friends.
