Summer Tech Camp Options

Tech & Design Camp

It’s the one camp to rule them all: Video Game Design, Robotics, Animation, Coding, 3D Modeling & Printing, Music Production, and other exciting projects are all fair game. Whether it’s building a working guitar made of LEGO MINDSTORMS, designing an action-packed video game to challenge friends with, or creating an animated mini-movie, the options are limitless, and the learning doesn’t stop! We teach the nuts & bolts behind these subjects, and campers use their imagination to make their project come alive. This isn’t your typical STEM Camp or Computer Camp, it’s a Tech & Design Camp where kids learn to design, build, and code; a tech camp for kids to create projects in digital art, engineering, and computer science.

Minecraft Camp

Are you ready for the ultimate week-long learning adventure? Our Minecraft Camp is tailored to all skill levels, whether you are just starting out your explorations, or you already know your way around creepers. We start by introducing campers to Redstone, a special kind of element that mimics electricity almost perfectly. Campers of nearly any skill level can have fun building circuit boards, coding unique mods, and launching their custom commands all inside of Minecraft. As they master Redstone skills, we offer challenges that teach programming, design, electrical engineering, and architecture, all while using teamwork and social skills. It’s the perfect blend of fun, learning, and creativity.

Java Coding Camp

Coding Icon

Java Coding Camp is for the young programmer who wants to take their skills to the next level. The Goal: create custom video games and conquer group-based challenges, all through the power of kids writing code! Campers start with a user-friendly tool to start coding in Java. Teacher-led demos and coding challenges allow for group problem-solving, as campers start applying what they’ve learned to create digital card & board games, platformers, visual-based animations, and more! Campers also use a Java IDE (Integrated Development Environment) to edit and write code for final projects. Requirements: previous experience with Scratch, EV3, GameMaker, or similar language. Grades 4-8. Full day only.

Girls STEM Camp

Girls STEM Icon

Girls… They’re awesome problem solvers, creators, designers, and collaborators. So why is it that girls claimed only 19% of all bachelor’s degrees in engineering and 18% in computer science in 2014? Our Girls STEM Camp tries to bring some balance to the world by exploring art, coding, and engineering through projects in animation, robotics, 3D modeling, fashion, and design. Our teachers build the group’s confidence and knowledge with teacher-led demos every day, as girls work through both individual and small group projects. Girls STEM Camp is a balance of creative storytelling, design, and empowerment, with technology as a tool. No prior tech experience is required; open to girls entering grades 2-8.

We loved the Empow experience. My kids could not get enough of it – they nagged us every morning to leave earlier (which has never happened before). I am really pleased that both boys, who have very different interests, were so engaged.

Melissa a Lexington Empow Camp mother

“It’s a unique camp… where you can learn new technologies, which is something you can’t really do at home.”

Student

“I keep coming back here because it’s a place where I can be myself.” “If I could come here all the time, I definitely would want to.”

Our Curriculum & Teaching Approach

We have always been focused on getting girls and boys across a wide range of interests and ages excited about the creative power of technology. As educators, we’re also constantly trying to improve our practices and tools. We’ve built a new system that will support both of these goals: Talent Box.

Each child’s accomplishments are acknowledged in a way that is motivating, lasting, and flexible through the use of badges. Badges are awarded when kids complete tracks in specific technologies, and are also awarded for leveling-up in cross-disciplines, including secret unlockable badges! Kids choose projects that level-up in three domains: Art & Design, Building, and Coding.

Our Camp Differentiators

  • We’re affordable! Similar Tech Camps charge upwards of $1200! We sit at about half the price, without losing the educational quality. We also offer a liberal refund policy giving you up to 2 weeks before the start of camp to change your schedule.
  • We’re local! We are teaching at 7-9 locations every single week day! We have a busy outreach team that travels MA teaching kids how to design, build, and code in a school or library near you.
  • We’re year-round! College students make great counselors, but our Director and Lead Instructor team teaches year-round and is fully invested in creating a rich educational experience.
  • We give back! Every year, we allocate thousands of dollars to scholarships to help families in need. This year we also organized fundraising workshops with all sales going towards Cancer research and care through the PMC.
  • We’re mission-driven! We strive to make STEM education available to children regardless of economic background. We were selected as a participant of Boston’s 5th Quarter of Learning, which delivers 5 weeks of free summer programming for kids who don’t have a large selection of enrichment opportunities available to them.
  • We’re flexible! When kids arrive at camp, they are shown a selection of projects they can work on. It’s up to them to choose what they want to do. Plus, they won’t be stuck all week in a specific tech track. If they want to experience multiple technologies, they can! Kids tend to complete 1-3 projects in a week, and sometimes merge technologies into one (music for their video game, commercial about their robot, etc).
  • Lastly, we’re cool! (at least we think we are) We’re a fun, yet experienced staff, that has been running summer programs for many years. Leonid, the founder of Empow Studios, has been running Summer programs for 14 years! All of our camp directors and assistant camp directors have bachelors or masters degrees, and come from education, art, engineering, or computer science backgrounds. Most importantly, we channel our inner “kid” and make this educational experience as fun and enriching as possible. As you can imagine, it’s not unusual to hear that our teachers may be playing the same video games or reading the same books as your kids.

A Day at Camp

8:30am – 9:30am Drop-off and special activities. Kids play games and get comfortable with friends, staff, and the studio.

9:30am – 10:00am Project Time and Camp Circle-Up. We set up the schedule for the day and let kids ease into their projects. This is a good time for anyone to ask questions or get help before we transition into the morning activity.

10:00am – 10:30am Snack time and technology demos. We show kids student projects made at Empow to influence their creativity and get them excited to learn a new craft of their choice.

10:30am – 12:00pm Project time. Campers work on projects at their own pace, guided by our expert staff. Kids can choose to work individually with help from staff, or work with friends in a group project. This is where kids build their robots, design video games, and film unique animations!

12:00pm – 1:00pm Lunch and outdoor time. Our staff will walk the campers over to Depot Square and have lunch outside (weather permitting). When campers stay inside, they watch some awesome videos like Mythbusters or Smarter Every Day! Only full campers are here during this hour.

1:00pm – 3:00pm Project time. Campers continue to work on their projects and ask questions to our teachers.

3:00pm – 3:30pm Afternoon Snack and tech demo. Each day Staff give kids an introduction to a different technology that we teach. Kids can choose to try out the demo or go back to their own tech project.

3:00pm – 4:00pm Project time. Campers continue to work on their projects and ask questions to our teachers.

4:00pm – 5:30pm Extended day. Campers can play games with other students, continue their projects, or try something new!

Referrals

We recognize that customers who recommend us to their friends do so because they love and enjoy our programs. We’d like to reciprocate. We offer a $50 future program credit for a referral that brings us registration in a full-day Summer camp or an After-School Club membership.

The following conditions apply.

  • Program registration must be through us, not through a partner organization
  • Referring person must be a current customer
  • Referred person must be a new customer
  • Referred customer must complete the program
  • All gifts in the form of future program credit will be sent the following year.
  • One gift per family, regardless of the number of sessions attended.

To be awarded program credit, the new customer must cite you in the registration process. As the new customer creates an account, there is a question stating “How did you hear about us?”. The new customer must select “Friend” and type your first and last name.
